---------------------------------- Publishing Your World Wide Web Pages ---------------------------------- So you've just put the finishing touches on your world wide web home page and it's time to put it up. But how do you do it? The answer is that you need to follow a series of simple steps which we'll outline here for you. ------------------------------------ Things you'll need before you start: ------------------------------------ 1) A RadixNet SLIP/PPP plus Full Shell, a SLIP/PPP + Web account. If you don't have one and would like to be able to mount web pages, contact support@radix.net, or call tech support to make arrangements. 2) Some kind of FTP program, such as CuteFTP, WS_FTP, etc., or a terminal program that will allow you to access your 'shell' account (Procomm, Telix, Bitcomm, etc.) 3) Your home page and any graphic files that go with it, preferably in a single directory on your hard drive. Make sure you have all the names of the files handy on a written list where you can easily see them from your keyboard. 4) Your user ID and password (the same ones you use for your SLIP or PPP account) 3) About 15 to 30 minutes to do the work. -------------------- 'Mounting' Your Page -------------------- **Using an FTP program** 1) First, connect with RadixNet in the usual way using SLIP or PPP. 2) The next step is to establish an FTP connection between your computer and RadixNet. While FTP programs software vary slightly, the basic approach is the same. The FTP program will ask you for the name of the host you are trying to log into, your username, your password, and the type of host. The following should work with most windows-based FTP software: .......................................................................... host name: saltmine.radix.net userid: your user id password: your password host type: auto remote directory: WWW local directory: the name of the directory on your home computer containing you web page and graphics files. ........................................................................ 2) After typing in the above information, tell the program to connect to your RadixNet account. This is generally done by clicking on a 'connect' button or through a 'connect' pull down menu. 3) After a few seconds, your FTP program should tell you that you are connected to your RadixNet account WWW directory . Once you're connected, you should be able to click on a 'send' button or an 'arrow' button pointing from the file window on your computer to the WWW window (your web page directory) on RadixNet. If you've done it right, the file should start transfering to your Radixnet account. Most software will inform you that it's transfering the file(s) you've selected. Most will also inform you when the transfer process is complete. 4) The final step is to rename your home page as 'welcome.html'. In most FTP programs, this is done by clicking on the file you want to change (to highlight it) and then clicking on the 'rename' button, or selecting rename from the 'file' pull down menu. 5) You're done! Now, tell your web browser to look at: http://www.radix.net/~your user id Your web page is now visible to millions of people on the world wide web. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have a UNIX (NOT DOS or WINDOWS) based machine: The Standard UNIX (SCO, Linux, Solaris, etc) FTP program will work. Just make sure that you use the 'bin' option before 'putting' your graphics files. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
