RadixNet EMail Filter Explanation

The RadixNet EMail Filter starts with the premise that spam is rarely addressed directly to you. If you look at the 'To:' line in the header for most of the spam you have received, you will notice that your EMail address is almost never mentioned.

This makes sense because in order for the spam to have your EMail address listed, the spammer would need to send a separate EMail to each and every recipient. This is not how most spam software works.

The RadixNet EMail Filter takes advantage of this by allowing you to specify the 'To:' and 'CC:' addresses for which you will accept EMail. Any EMail addressed to someone not on your specified list is considered spam and will not be del ivered to you.

Unlike other Anti-Spam filters, the RadixNet filter:

  • Does not require prior knowledge of who the spammers are.
  • Let's you create your own individual filtering tailored to your requirements.
  • Never throws a piece of EMail away without giving you a chance to look at it.
  • Let's you look at the discarded mail so that you can change your filtering if you need to.

You control the filter yourself, through this web site, using your login ID and Password.

There are four main parts of the RadixNet EMail Filter, plus two special EMail commands you can use to manage rejected EMails:

DISABLE/ENABLE

You can Enable the filter by checking this box. Disable the filter by unchecking the box -- all of your filter information will be saved for you.

If you are a POP user, Enabling the default filter is all you need to do to start ridding yourself of spam.

THE TO LIST

In the To list, you specify all EMail addresses for which you wish to receive mail.

Any EMail addressed to someone not on your specified list is considered spam. For example, let us say that your EMail address at RadixNet is johndoe@radix.net, you are the webmaster for yourdomain.com, and you receive EMail from a mailing list called Basketweaving@lists.com.

In this case, your list of allowable To/CC addresses would be:

johndoe@radix.net
webmaster@yourdomain.com
basketweaving@lists.com

Any EMail that does not have one of the above in the To: or Cc: line of the EMail would be considered spam.

THE WHITE LIST

Sometimes you receive mail which you really do want, but it does not contain a 'To' line that you can place in your TO List. The White List allows you to create a list of those from whom you always wish to accept mail, regardless of wha t the 'To' address says.

THE BLACK LIST

Sometimes you get mail which is properly addressed to you, but you don't want it. In the Black List you create a list of those EMail addresses FROM which you never wish to receive mail.

WHAT IS THE SPAM LOG?

The RadixNet EMail Filter does not delete filtered messages right away. Instead, the messages are saved for one week. A summary of the messages that were saved is sent to you twice a day at 6AM and 6PM. If you did not receive any spam, you will not receive a Log messages for that time period. The log includes the

From:
To:
Cc:
Subject:
Message-Id:

lines from the messages.

For the first few weeks after you set start using the EMail filter, you should check the SPAM Logs to see if you are filtering mail that you really want and adjust your filters accordingly. This is especially true if you subscribe to lo w traffic mailing lists.

You can request a Spam Log at any time by sending an EMail to yourself with a Subject of spamlog. Example:

To: mylogin@radix.net
Subject: spamlog

This will give you a list of any spam which arrived since the last spam log was sent to you.

If you would like a list of all spam which is currently available for retrieval, then change the Subject line to "spamlog all". Example:

To: mylogin@radix.net
Subject: spamlog all

Please note that filtered mail (the Spam) will be permanently deleted after 7 days.

RECOVERING EMAIL

You may find that the Spam Log includes mail that you would actually like to receive.

You can retrieve any of the messages by sending a message to yourself with the word "resend" in the subject line. The body of the message should include the complete Message-Id lines of the messages you wish to retrieve.

The easiest way to do this is to simply Reply to the Spam Log:

  • Edit the Subject line to include the word "resend"
  • Delete any Message ID lines within the Spam Log message which you do NOT want.

A few minutes after you send yourself this message, the saved SPAM EMails will be sent to you. Caution:

  • The From address on these "resent" EMails will be your own EMail address.
  • The Original Headers will be at the bottom of the EMail text.
