Report from Ithaca

17 April 99

Pramoedya is here! We had a wonderful meeting with Hunter Rawlings and a beautiful ceremony at the Kroch Library. Pramoedya received a commemorative Cornell clock from Hunter (Nancy Stage arranged that), and Pramoedya gave Hunter signed copies of his Buru series, "Mute Solilloquy," "Tales", and the Indonesia Journal (compliments of SEAP and SEAP publications). Pram suggested that the books will be good for the library, to which Hunter replied gracefully that he will first place them in his library so he could read them.

Even though the weather is "typical" Ithaca, i.e., precipitating, I am sure that it will not dampen the spirit of the party-goers today.

On Monday at 4:30 in Hollis Cornell, Pram will read a short passage from his "new" book which Marty Hatch will read in English. Following that at 5 we will move to the AD White House for a reception and book signing.
