  The greenhouse effect -- having gasses in the atmosphere that absorb
infrared radiation (such as is emitted by the earth) but are transparent
to visible radiation (such as is emitted by the sun) -- is a well observed
fact.  This is the reason the average surface temperature of the earth is
+15 C, rather than -18 C.  Check any reasonable introduction to physical
meteorology for more information.  My favorite is _Atmospheric Science:
An Introductory Survey_ by Wallace, J. and P. Hobbs.
