Race Beginnings

The Rockville Rotary Twilight Runfest has its roots in 1984 as the Rockville Rotary Run, a traditional morning race held on Memorial Day. The race was conducted by Montgomery County Road Runners Club in conjunction with the Rockville Rotary Club and the City of Rockville's Recreation and Parks Department. After two runnings (1984 and 1985), the City of Rockville asked MCRRC to move the race to July -- and make it an evening race with an accompanying festival. Thus, the first Twilighter was held in July of 1986 with a fireworks show second in size only to the City's Fourth of July shoe.

The goal of the Twilighter, in addition to generating funds for its beneficiaries, has always been to provide a first quality race for the runners and a great block party for the everyone.

Over the years, the Twilighter has grown in size and quality of field. Despite our relatively small prize money purse,ast participants and winners have included Olympians, Olympic trials qualifiers, regional and national class runners, both male and female.
