Volunteer FAQ for Race Night
As a race official for the Twilighter, you will probably be asked a number of
questions by runners and spectators during the event. This
"Frequently-Asked Questions" list (FAQ) is designed to provide answers
to some of the basic questions you may encounter. You will receive a
printed version of this FAQ on race night; please keep it with you. You
might also wish to go through the other parts of this web site to better
understand the race.
Before you head out to your job, please be sure that you are wearing
your Volunteer T-Shirt and your Race Official tag (which you will
receive at check-in) so that runners and spectators know that you are a race
official. At the end of the evening, please fill out the Volunteer Feedback
Questionnaire on the back of the FAQ sheet and turn it in to your team
captain or other race official. If you forget, you can use the Online
Volunteer Feedback Questionnaire.
Good Luck, Have Fun, and THANKS for
Volunteering!
Frequently Asked Question (and other information each volunteer should
know).

- Medical
Emergencies
- If you encounter a medical or other emergency situation, you should
immediately contact a senior race official (usually wearing a team captain polo shirt ), a
radio operator (located at half-mile intervals along the course and
several locations around the start finish line), police officer, or an
on-course emergency official (on bicycles). Please do NOT call 911
unless you cannot otherwise contact a senior race official, radio
operator, or on-course emergency personnel.
-
- Where's the Start/Finish?
- The 8k and 8k wheelchair races start and finish at the same place --
under the banner on North Washington Street.
-
- What about the Fun Run?
- Fun Run participants should line up on Middle Lane (not on North
Washington Street) so you do not accidentally start with the 8k runners.
Look for the clump of white balloons. You will be taken to the starting
line after the 8k runners are clear of the area.
-
- Will there be split times?
- Yes. There will be split times and clocks at every mile on the course.
-

will they score the race?
- The race will use the ChampionChip system for timing and scoring. Be
sure you have your chip tied securely to you sneaker.
-
- Can I run with my
headphones, baby jogger, stroller, dog, skates, ferret, pot-bellied pig,
grandmother, .... ?
- NO! This is VERY IMPORTANT. For safety reasons, strollers, baby joggers,
pets, skates, rollerblades, and headphones are NOT allowed. Do not
tell any runner or other person, "Oh, it'll be OK." It will not
be OK! (Note, Granny is actually OK if she runs a 13 minute/mile pace or
better.)
-
- Where do I park?
- Parking for runners and spectators is available at the Middle Lane
lot, the County Council Office Building garage on Fleet
Street, in the EOB underground lot on Monroe Street, and at other
locations in the area. (See map.)
Parking spaces for disabled persons will be reserved in the Middle
Lane lot.

- Medical Assistance and Emergency Communications
 | Medical Central is located on the walk at 110 North Washington Street,
at the intersection with Middle Lane. |
 | There will be medical coverage at all aid stations, throughout the
course, and at the finish line. |
 | Radio operators will be stationed about every 1/2 mile and medics on
bicycles will be roving on the course. A radio operator should be
located within a few blocks of your volunteer station. |
 | Prior to the beginning of the race, you should locate and identify the
nearest radio operator and telephone that you would use in the event of
an emergency. In such an emergency, the radio operator will summon
assistance. |
-
- Telephones
- Pay phones are located at various locations on North Washington Street.
If the person has a true emergency, you should help him/her find a
phone. In the case of medical emergencies, you should contact Med
Central through the nearest radio operator.
-
- Weather Plan
- There will be no alternate date nor any refunds. If weather threatens,
specific instructions will be announced over the public address system.
The race may be delayed to as late as 9:45p.m., after which time the
race will be cancelled. T-shirts and random awards will be distributed
even if the race is cancelled, and the festival will go on, if possible.
In the event of extreme heat and/or humidity, the race may be cancelled
and the event turned into an un-timed fun run.
-
- Irate Citizens
- You may be approached by a resident or motorist who is upset that the
streets in his/her neighborhood have been temporarily closed. Please
remain calm and courteous and (if possible) take the time to hear the
person out and provide assistance. The following information may help:
 | Flyers and mailings announcing the street closings and details of the
event were delivered to all residents on the course about two weeks ago. |
 | Streets are closed for a MAXIMUM of one hour. Access to most locations
affected by the race is blocked for a much shorter period. |
 | Should an emergency arise, emergency vehicles will have access. |
 | This is a community event that supports a very worthy cause. Please note
any complaints/suggestions and pass them on to your team captain. |
-
- Race Proceeds
- Race proceeds go to support the Rockville Youth Recreation Fund and
other Rotary Club beneficiaries.
-
- T-Shirt Sales
- Additional race t-shirts, if there are extras, may be on sale in the
Festival area after the race -- however this is quite unlikely.
-
- Lost People
- Please arrange with friends, family, and fellow runners a specific place
to meet after you finish the race. If you really need to make an
announcement to find someone, please go to the base of the finish line
announcing stand. During the awards presentations, please go to the band
platform, stage right.
-
- Food
- Free post-race food will be available for runners only (not their
non-running guests). Volunteers are welcome to help themselves after the
runners get through the line (since you've already had your meal).
Various vendors will also have food for sale.

 | Awards to the top 3 open, masters, and wheelchair winners and first in
each age group will be presented from the stage at 10:15 pm. |

evening of the race or early the next day. |
 | There will be no mailing of results to runners. |
