What is the Rabin Mishna Study Group?

The concept of a e-mail list to study Mishna "in the climate of Conservative Judaism" came to Rabbi Simcha Roth in the days following the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, in November 1995. In his words:

Sha'alu sh'lom Yerushalayim - Seek the peace of Jerusalem.

Our hearts are very heavy, and we seek ways of giving expression to the
emotional turmoil. I have been discussing privately for some time with
several subscribers to Tor-Ch and\or CJ-L the idea of daily study through
E-Mail. Ed Frankel suggested to me that we study Mishnah, since this is the
traditional study discipline in the house of mourning. We study Mishnah for
our own edification and to do honour and to give spiritual succour to the
deceased.

I am hereby proposing that we utilize this terrible tragedy to commit
ourselves to a few moments of daily study and discussion - initially to get us
through the Shiv'ah period, and thereafter to memorialize the name of Yitzchak
Rabin through daily study of Mishnah for a few moments.

The idea is that we receive each day in our email-box either the text of a
Mishnah with its initial explanation (in layperson terms) or the subsequent
comments, queries and amplifications contributed by the Study-Groupers. When
that Mishnah has been exhausted we move on to the next, and so forth.... (November 6, 1995)
