This test message is going out over BOTH the new Yahoo Groups list and the old Listbot list. If you don't get it twice, that means you are probably not subscribed to the new Yahoo list. I tried to get everyone subbed, but may have inadvertently missed one or two of you. To subscribe yourself, send a message to dailyboardshow-subscribe@yahoogroups.com If you have been subscribed and do not wish to be, you can unsubscribe at: dailyboardshow-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com The web address of the new list is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dailyboardshow As at Listbot, the archives of this list will be public. Subscription policy is open, and the list is announcement-only. Once I know this is working properly and everyone is subbed, I will remove all your addresses from Listbot and delete the list. If anyone has any problems with the messages on this list, please let me know. I turned off the HTML feature and disallowed attachments, but I may have missed something that could cause problems for some of you. Wednesday 1 Aug 2001: Diane Parsons sends a message of thanks to the candidates, the Election Committee, and those who voted for her in the recently concluded election. === Election News: As the dust settles from another USGW election, one thing is abundantly clear. This is going to be an interesting term, not least because Tim Stowell and Ron Eason will have to work together, since they represent the same region. There are a lot of new faces, including Ron Eason, Vicki Shaeffer, Nate Zipfel, Mary Ann Hetrick, and Robert Bremer. There will be four runoff elections, with the potential to seat at least three newbies. The DBS congratulates all the winners and wishes them well in the upcoming term. We hear Babs Dore was absolutely speechless when the results were announced. ;) Final results have been posted at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwelections/electionresults.html Of course, this would not be a USGW election without glitches. We have received reports that the polls closed three hours earlier than prominently advertised on the website. This was apparently due to a failure to test the software; the server runs on the Naval Observatory clock, which runs on East coast time. The error was not discovered until after the polls closed and we have no idea how many people were prevented from voting by this significant error. No explanation from the EC yet, either. However, we are given to understand that at least one person who was not able to vote because the polls closed early was offered a three hour window _today_ to vote and will of course be eligible to vote in the runoff. Excuses, Excuses Corner: When asked why Maggie Stewart felt the need to create ACP state census coordinators out of whole cloth, Kelly Courtney-Blizzard explained: "Strength in numbers without risk of differences of opinions. If there are a dozen SCC's listed versus 5 SCC's then it would appear on the surface that the group is larger than it really is. It also appears that the project would have more security in elections, or even when dealing with inside matters such as keeping the project coordinator in place. The major factor was to make it appear that all of the states had coordinator's in place to prevent anyone from the Census Project coming over to the ACP and getting inside information." [note the reference to "security in elections"; did they intend to cast votes on behalf of those "fake" people? ] In another response, this time to Ron Eason, Kelly noted: "There was always major paranoia about someone from your project getting inside of the ACP. The best solution was to make it impossible by having all of the positions filled, even if it meant more work for a few of us...The reason that Pauline's census was taken and reworked was because there was no way on earth that Maggie (the ACP) would have allowed you (the Census Project) to have a file online that she didn't have available as well. Plus Pauline was very vocal in saying that the ACP was not welcomed to the transcription and that was taken like a personal dare for Maggie to post it anyway. I am witness to the entire situation and the people involved and I would like to let Pauline know that I would be willing to actually travel and appear in court should she ever want to pursue the issue." [Yes. A "personal dare". To her credit, Linda Lewis was, by all reports, happy to see the ACP leave the Archives after the debacle with Pauline's files. We recall that Kay L. Mason, who works with the former ACP publicly supported and defended the ACP's actions in this matter and have asked her publicly to comment on it. We've received no response and really don't expect to.] Rolling Heads Corner: We have heard from several sources about recent [yesterday] layoffs at Root$web. Included in the pink slip frenzy were Nancy Trice and Joan Young; there are rumors of "several others" being let go as well. We hear that long term USGW member and GenConnect co-developer Nancy Trice was actually laid off while on vacation to recover from surgery. Guess $15 million doesn't go as far as it used to. :( Buyer Beware Corner: Some of you on RW county mailing lists have been receiving messages sending you to http://65.10.15.149/FreeGen/Home.html, where you will find "Angie's Genealogy Research Database". The site claims to have "over 11 million" names available for free search, with "over 1 billion left to add." However, it does require one to register first and provides almost no information on what exactly it contains or what they will do with the registration information. The IP address traces to home.com in Garland, TX. According to David Samuelsen, the real home page for this site is http://www.genhomepage.com, which is owned by Stephen Wood and hosted by Matt Helm's FamilyToolBox.net. Bookkeeping Corner: Since the move to Yahoo Groups seems to have gone rather smoothly, this will be the last DBS you will receive via ListBot. After it goes out I will be unsubbing all addresses from Listbot. Read at your own risk! Friday 3 August 2001: No Board activity today, thus far === Election News: The runoff election will begin today at 12 noon CDT and will end at 12 midnight CDT on 13 August. Further information is available at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgwelections/runoff.html The Election Committee has posted a brief survey at: http://www.giddeon.com/survey.html Please go take it; it will help in managing future elections. In response to several questions about yesterday's news item that the voting both had closed several hours early, I wrote to both Larry Stephens and Linda Haas Davenport and asked what happened. Here is what they had to say: Larry: "The confusion was because of time zones. The software is based on the date, i.e., once the server said it was 8/1 the election closed down. When Linda posted an ending time of midnight PDT none of us thought about the fact of the server being on on CST so it closed down at midnight CST which was actually 9:00 PM PDT." Linda: "The end of the election was set for midnight PDT because that's when the past elections had been closed. However, the voting booth software was written so that it automatically stopped accepting votes at midnight - So at midnight CDT when the date rolled over from July 31 to Aug 1st the voting booth software automatically closed. Neither Larry nor the EC knew this would happen this way...That's why the Run-Offs are set for CDT time and future elections will use CDT." [We note that Larry uses "CST" in his message and Linda uses "CDT" in hers; we assume they will work out the discrepancy and let us all know which it is before the runoff closes.] Apparently the impact of the voting booth closing three hours early was minimal; both Linda and Larry report that only two people were known to be affected. === "When kings the sword of justice first lay down, They are no kings, though they possess the crown.
