Read at your own risk! Tuesday 14 August 2001: Tina Vickery moves to thank the Election Committee "for a hard job, well done." Richard Harrison seconds the motion. Wednesday 15 August 2001: Sundee Maynez resigns as Board Secretary. She indicates that she has a log of an IRC chat in which two people disparage her intelligence and "decided that the board Sec is too stupid to not know how to vote," and suggests the Board "go find someone smarter!" Sundee rescinds her resignation, noting that she is looking forward to working with the new Board." === There Is No Joy In Mudville Corner: The big news today is the succesful end of the third USGenWeb general election. And the results are, quite frankly, astonishing. Perhaps the most encouraging news is that the voters saw fit to not return Maggie "Woman of Many Faces" Stewart to the Board for another term. Second most encouraging thing is that a large number of people on the board are new faces; there are fully 7 people on the new Board that have never been elected to serve at the national level before [one of them is me]. Of course, depending on your perspective, this is either a New Day Dawning or The End of The World As We Know It. Only time will tell which it is; but I'll tell ya, I'm feeling pretty optimistic right now. One thing I do wonder though...where is my subscription to BOARD-EXEC? I do recall that its Tim's tradition to sub all new Board members to both Board lists so that they can learn the ropes. ;) === "Democracy used to be a good thing, but now it has gotten into the wrong hands." ---Senator Jesse Helms This has been your Daily Board Show. -Teresa Lindquist merope@radix.net ------- Daily Board Show, (c) 2001 Teresa Lindquist, all rights reserved. Read at your own risk! Wednesday 15 August 2001: Tim Stowell gives the motion to thank the Election Committee number 01-24 and opens the floor for discussion. Tim asks "does the Board intend to also certify the results of the election?" [well, we saw that coming] Betsy Mills asks Tim to resub Phyllis Rippee to the Board-L list and says "I checked, she didn't bounce off, you removed her. Please do not start these games now." [this follows a note to Betsy from Phyllis asking for her help in getting resubbed.] Tim forwards a copy of his message to Phyllis to the Board. It explains why he unsubbed her from Board-L: "I was clearing out my old mailing list problems and ran across this which appeared to say unsub the first address and if not that, then the second one." [The attached email from Phyllis is fully four months old.] Teri Pettis asks if the Board is supposed to certify elections and says she can find no record of the Board having done so in the past elections. She notes, "On the surface it sounds like a simple declaration of confidence, but if you look deeper it seems that "certifying" the election might imply that the Board had the right to declare it invalid if we wanted to, which is a philosophically shaky precedent to set. I would prefer to keep the precedent that the Advisory Board sets up an Election Committee, and then trusts them to take care of certifying the election." She agrees with the motion to thank the EC. Richard Harrison agrees with Teri and notes "there was a todo about this last year and I believe the Board decided that publication of the election results by the EC was all that was necessary." Thursday 16 August 2001: Tim says he was just bringing the issue up since "some folks will fuss if the effort isn't at least expended in bringing this up." Sundee asks if she should record Tim's mention of certification as a motion. === Once Is Not Enough Corner: Linda Haas Davenport, chair of the Election Committee, has announced publicly that, although Sundee Maynez did indeed use both email addresses and passwords to vote, she did not vote more than once for any position. Rampant Capitalism Corner: Above the fold news today in the New Zoo Review [first story actually, before any actual Root$web news] is an announcement that Ancestry.com is reopening its Affiliate Program. This is the program whereby you put a search box or ad-link on your pages and Ancestry pays you cash for anyone you refer through who becomes a member or buys stuff from their store. Before the old version of the program faded away there were a lot of complaints about missed payments, incorrect payments and the like; according to the blurb, they've fixed all that and its now just peachy. For more info, go here: http://ancestry.com/home/partner/affiliate.asp Traffic Jam Corner: Jupiter Media Metrix released a report yesterday indicating that MyFamily.com [including its entire family of sites: Ancestry, Root$web,ThirdAge, etc] is the 49th most visited site on the entire internet. The press release is here for more info: http://www.jmm.com/xp/jmm/press/2001/pr_081301.xml More Pink Slips Corner: Also in the news today, Sierra, maker of genealogy software Generations, has laid off a huge amount of people. Apparently they are getting rid of all departments other than their print business. A total of 245 people were canned [97 of them from their gaming division Dynamix, for those of you who follow online gaming news]. The press release isn't up on their parent company's [Vivendi Universal] web site yet. The Seattle Times did an article on the layoffs, which is here: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/134329640_sierra15.html The full press release is here:http://www.stomped.com/published/redwood997819940_1_1.html === "The job of a citizen is to keep his mouth open." ---Gunther Grass This been your Daily Board Show. -Teresa Lindquist merope@radix.net ------- Daily Board Show, (c) 2001 by Teresa Lindquist, all rights reserved. Read at your own risk! Thursday 16 August 2001: Tim Stowell forwards the fourth Election Committee report to the Board. [full report was sent to this list yesterday] === Tradition Corner: It appears that Tim Stowell has abandoned the tradition, which IIRC he started and has defended as recently as a few months ago, of subscribing new Board members to the Board-L and Board-Exec lists prior to the start of their terms so that they can learn the ropes. Despite direct reminders by both the current Board and a couple of the new members, he apparently has no intention of subbing any of us to anything but Board-L [which all but two of us were subbed to already]. We are completely unsurprised by this. Hot Off The Presses Corner: We've heard through the grapevine that Ancestry.com is going to be publishing a new book about doing research in the U.S. Federal census records and USGenWeb and apparently both Census Projects will be well represented. The book should be out soon, so keep an eye out for it. We're sure it will be big news in the New Zoo Review. Hot Off the Other Presses Corner: Several of you have forwarded to us the news release regarding Heritage Quest being bought from Sierra by ProQuest. ProQuest has announced that it does intend to go forward with putting the entire U.S. Federal Census Online [hmmm...wonder if Ancestry knows about this for their book?] Here is information extracted from the press release: "ProQuest Company's Information and Learning unit announced today that it has acquired Heritage Quest, the North Salt Lake City-based genealogical information company, from Sierra On-Line, Inc., a division of Vivendi Universal Publishing...The Heritage Quest product line -- which includes the popular Heritage Quest Web-based information service, as well as microfilm, CD-ROMs, and print products...-- will be added to ProQuest's genealogical resources, including the Genealogy and Local History Online database and Sanborn Maps Online . To date, Heritage Quest information comprises more than 3 terabytes of digitized data, with more digitization planned. Having the entire US Federal Census online, 1790-1920, will make it much easier for genealogists to research their families..."Census records are the most uniquely valuable research tool for genealogical researchers, because they provides specifics...When added to the thousands of family records and local history files that we already offer online and those that we are acquiring, researchers will be able to gain a more complete picture of their heritage..." These online census records will be fully indexed to extremely high standards and offered in full page image, so users can view documents in their original format. In addition to the census records, ProQuest will expand its offerings with other unique content from Heritage Quest: military records, ship passenger lists, county records, selected state censuses, Native American records, marriage records, local and family histories, African-American family records, city directories, and more. ProQuest will begin to integrate the Heritage Quest data into its genealogical databases immediately. Current subscribers to Genealogy and Local History Online, ProQuest's Web-based genealogy database for libraries, will have access to census data by late fall 2001...The Heritage Quest name will be extended as a brand name for all of ProQuest's genealogical resources, including online databases, microform, and print products." === "Know what's weird?
