Read at your own risk! Sunday 25 March 2001: Ellen Pack notifies the Board that she is resigning her Board seat and leaving the USGenWeb Project altogether. Ginger Hayes resigns from the Board effective immediately, noting that since "this board continues to operate by a double standard and chooses to address, or more appropriately, not address issues, often based on who is involved," it is time for her to go. She says she would have done it earlier, but "remained in the hope that something would change. It hasn't and it isn't going to." Moving with lightening speed, Richard Harrison moves to "accept, with regret, the resignation of Ginger Hayes and instruct the NC to immediately post notices seeking applicants for the position on all appropriate lists" and that "the Board thank Ginger Hayes for her efforts as Northeast/North Central Region State Coordinator Representative." Richard Harrison also moves that "the Board accept, with regret, the resignation of Ellen Pack and instruct the NC to immediately post notices seeking applicants for the position on all appropriate lists" and that "the Board thank Ellen Pack for her efforts as SE/MA CC Region County Coordinator Representative, and commend her especially for her work in developing the Mediation Program." Shari Handley seconds both of the above motions. Monday 26 March 2001: Voting continues on Motion 01-07; 14 Board members have now voted yes on this motion. Teri Pettis hope that closing votes on the weekend will not become standard policy; she cannot read her email on the weekends. === Mystery To Me Corner: No, I don't know why three Board members have resigned in as many days. It is likely that Richard Howland resigned for personal reasons, but given who the other two resignees are and the substance of Ginger Hayes' resignation letter, I would bet it has something to do with the Census Project and/or Linda Lewis. Cashing Out Corner: John Schunk has informed the project [or at least the part of it that reads the -ALL list] that so far enough has been collected to fund the two service mark applications and that cashiers checks have been sent to National Commander Tim Stowell to include with the applications. They do not yet have enough to cover the attorney's fees as well, but are optimistic that they will have enough by the time the fees are due. == "Hope is the power of being cheerful in circumstances which we know to be desperate." ---G. Read at your own risk! Tuesday 27 March 2001: Tim Stowell revises the count on Motion 01-07 to reflect the 14 yes votes received thus far. The motion to accept the resignation of Richard Howland is numbered 01-08 and the floor is opened for discussion. The motion to accept the resignation of Ellen Pack is numbered 01-09 and the floor is opened for discussion. The motion to accept the resignation of Ginger Hayes is numbered 01-10 and the floor is opened for discussion. Tim's daily report notes that Richard, Ellen and Ginger have resigned and that the three motions to accept their resignations are under discussion. Noting "As there seems to be nothing further to discuss on the matter(s)" of the three resignations, Holly Timm calls the vote on Motion 01-08, 01-09, and 01-10. Joy Fisher says she was hoping a discussin period would give Richard, Ellen, and Ginger time to change their minds. Tina Vickery agrees with Holly and seconds the call. Tim opens the voting on Motion 01-08, 01-09 and 01-10. Thus far, there has been one yes vote on each motion. === A Rose By Any Other Name Corner: For the several of you that asked, no, we are not changing the name of this newsletter to the "Daily Board Project", which was the subject line of yesterday's edition. It was a typo, one of many. We also need to apologize for misspelling Board member Teri Pettit's name. === "To endure is greater than to dare; to tire out hostile fortune; to be daunted by no difficulty; to keep heart when all have lost it; to go through intrigue spotless; to forgo even ambition when the end is gained --who can say this is not greatness?" ---William Makepeace Thackeray This has been your Daily Board Show. -Teresa Lindquist merope@radix.net ------- Daily Board Show, (c) 2001 by Teresa Lindquist, all rights reserved. Tuesday 27 March 2001: Voting proceeds on the three motions on the floor; vote counts are as follows: 01-08 [Richard Howland]: 10 yes votes 01-09 [Ellen Pack]: 10 yes votes 01-10 [Ginger Hayes]: 10 yes votes [These motions have passed and three Board members have been dispatched in record speed. This leaves the NE/NC region woefully underrepresented]. Wednesday 28 March 2001: Tim Stowell forwards to Board-L some private mail between himself and a Board-L subscriber in which he indicates that he unsubscribed a duplicate address. === Update on the News Corner: Joann Abby, co-founder of the GenExchange, released the following update on their server problems this morning: "Just wanted to let everyone know that Anthony and our attorney were in court this morning in Jacksonville Florida for the hearing to get the GenExchange systems returned.... Well, they were in and out of the courtroom in 15 MINUTES!!! WE WIN!!!! YIPPIE!!!! Mr. Whoosey Whatsey didn't even bring an attorney with him. Our attorney asked him ONE question, the Judge asked him several and poof....RETURN THE SYSTEMS AND DATA TO THE ABBY'S! Anthony will be picking them up at 1pm this afternoon after a check of the hardware. Once he returns home, there will be some "heavy duty" testing that will need to be done before the GenExchange is placed back online. So stay tune everyone!!!! Thank you all so very much for your support and patience through this VERY trying time!!!!!" With any luck, they will be back online in a day or so. === "If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. Read at your own risk! Thursday 29 March 2001: Tim Stowell declares Motions 01-08, 01-09, and 01-10 passed, with 11 yes votes each [we still county only 10]. Tim reminds the Board that Ellen Pack's resignation has left the Board Mediator group short one. The next two highest vote-getters, with 6 votes each, were Teri Pettit and Pam Reid. Bot of them suggested another vote, so Tim has asked the Board members to send in a vote for a replacement. [It is not clear whether voting is limited to Pam and Teri. based on the mediation proposal it should be, but who knows?.] Richard votes for Pam Reid. === Missing WebSites Corner: A reader writes to tell us that genweb.net has been offline for over a month with no information or explanation as to what has happened to it. Trying to link to any site there returns a "server is down or not responding" message. This is Randall Haight's site; I have sent an email to him at the last address I could find, but have not received a reply. I don't know much about this site; I gather he provided lots of email lists and free home pages. If anyone knows what is going on, drop us a line and let us know. === "No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session." ---Mark Twain This has been your Daily Board Show. -Teresa Lindquist merope@radix.net ------- Daily Board Show, (c) 2001 by Teresa Lindquist, all rights reserved. Read at your own risk! Thursday 29 March 2001: Teri Pettit points out that Tim Stowell did not relay the instructions that she and Pam Reid agreed on, and notes "We didn't suggest that everybody vote between Pam and myself to fill the one slot, but rather that anybody who voted for any of the resigning Board members (Richard Howland, Ellen Pack or Ginger Hayes) send in revotes for those positions, with the votes to be from among anybody that they DIDN'T already vote for." She also includes a series of emails between herself, Tim, and Pam. In it, Tim says he'll conduct the nominations for replacement mediation committee members however Teri and Pam would like, apparently unaware that the mediation proposal itself gives instruction on how to handle a tie between nominees. Richard Harrison does not like Teri's approach, noting "The election was completed and the results announced. This procedure could change those results." He says it is not up to Teri and Pam how to proceed but rather up to the whole board. He suggests either "a run-off between Teri & Pam as the next-highest vote getters or a new election for the vacated position." [Richard is also apparently unfamiliar with the mediation proposal.] To clarify his earlier posts to teh Board, Tim tells the Board that Teri did not have his permission to forward his private mail to the list. He also notes "That members would get multiple votes or no votes for an open position is ludicrous. All remaining members of the Board - the 12 of you should get one vote each for the open position just as you would for any other vacancy." He specifies that no one should vote for those already part of the mediation panel or for Holly and Betsy, who both declined to serve. He notes "That leaves 6 members to be voted on (Pam, Teri, Richard Howland, Ken, Barbara and Maggie)" and asks the Board members to send in their votes for one of these six. [Yes, he did actually tell them they could vote for Richard Howland, who has resigned.] Holly Timm corrects Tim's list of 6 eligible Board members to Pam, Teri, Ken Short, Barbara Dore, Maggie Stewart, and Tina Vickery. She casts her vote for Tina. Teri agrees with Richard that the whole Board should decide how this is handled and wishes she had suggested that herself. However, she reminds him that Tim did tell her and Pam that he would handle it however they suggested, and she was surprised to see him do something different than what she and Pam agreed to. She explains her approach: "If Ellen or anyone else had really got a chance to sit on the Mediation Board, then I agree that a vote for just that one position would be clearly the way to go. Since, however, three Board members resigned within 2 days after the nominations concluded, it seemed to me that it made more sense to basically start over from scratch with the whole vote. My suggestion amounts to doing that but with less work...Everyone still gets exactly 5 votes, but the 5 votes are from the remaining pool instead of the original pool. If we don't start over...then somebody who voted for none of the resignees would basically get six votes for the Mediator Committee, their five original votes plus their one in the replacement vote, because all of their votes were for someone who is still eligible. Somebody who voted for all three of the resignees would only get three votes that were meaningful, their two that were for non-resignees from the original vote, plus their one in the replacement vote, because three of their votes were for people who, completely unbeknownst to them, were on the brink of resigning...Now it is reasonable to argue...that there is no provision for starting the vote over, and we have to treat it like any other replacement from a sitting committee...But I don't think it's "ludicrous" to suggest what amounts to starting over when there was a large change in the candidate pool a mere 2 days after the original vote." Holly Timm notes "this method means that because I didn't vote for any of the resignees I don't get any input at all into who fills the vacancy although two of my original votes went to people who didn't get on." She asks about the votes of the people who resigned and notes that this is "All getting very complicated." Teri notes that all original votes should be counted, except for votes for people who have resigned and should include the votes of people who resigned. She says "Basically, the results would be exactly what would have happened if Ellen, Richard Howland and Ginger Hayes had disqualified themselves from the committee BEFORE the voting, just like you did." She thinks people would have used their votes differently if they had known that Ellen, Richard and Ginger were going to resign. Teri notes that she objects to the implication that her idea "would give some people more say than others, when the whole motivation for it was to give everyone an equal opportunity to distribute their 5 votes among the people who are really going to be available for the job." Joe Zsedeny suggests that they fill the vacant Board positions first and then "vote with a full Board to fill the mediation position or to revote with a full Board for all the mediation positions." Richard notes that its fine to wait for the Board to be at full strength so long as it does not keep the mediation panel from doing its job. He notes that they can rotate between four members instead of five. He suggests that when the vote takes place it be for the empty slot only and asks when the request for applicants for the open Board positions will go out. Friday 30 March 2001: Tim notifies the Board that the service mark applications "have been completed and sent off to the appropriate address in Washington, DC as of 3/28/01." Tim sends out the request for volunteers to fill the three open Board slots. These are CC reps for the NE/NC region and the SE/MA region, and a SC rep for the NE/NC region. If you qualify and are interested in serving in this capacity please email your name and the county or counties you host in the region for which you are seeking the positon to both Holly Timm and Tim Stowell. === Vanishing Point Corner: A reader writes to us about www.genweb.net, Randall Haight's disappeared genealogy webpage and mailing list site: "Back in early October 2000 the server was hacked. It caused much concern on the local area mailing list where I live, as genweb.net had hosted a page of provincial links that someone kept quite up-to-date. I checked once in a while for about a month or so, and genweb.net never came back up. I think it might have have managed to come back in some form, at least as a very basic shell of a website sometime between Nov and your notice. But I can't find any notes as to when. The mailing lists he hosted have not been back since that date. At least there has been no traffic on any of those that I belonged to since early Oct." Apparently, Randy was never ever able to get this problem resolved. www.genweb.net remains inactive. If anyone has further information, please forward it. === "Don't use the conduct of a fool as a precedent." ---the Talmud This has been your Daily Board Show. -Teresa Lindquist merope@radix.net ------- Daily Board Show, (c) 2001 by Teresa Lindquist, all rights reserved.
