RADIOFREE USGENWEB--Free the Rootsweb Four! Conditions
ON Tuesday, April 20th, 1999, fully 93 days after the
start of a 30 day ban, Mr. Brian Leverich finally responded to a request by the ILGenWeb State
Coordinator regarding how two of her County Coordinators, Susan Cook and Carol Dean, might
be allowed to once again participate fully in their required USGenWeb Project state mailing list.
The CCs had themselves written to Mr. Leverich twice but had received no response. The
following summarizes his response to the SC.
He begins, "My apologies for the slow response. At least two and possibly more of the banned
folks flagrantly ignored the ban, and nobody here on the staff has had the time to sort out who
was doing what." He also says that no one on his staff has the time to monitor Susan and Carol's
posts to ensure "civility", and "Consequently, if they want to come back, the deal is that for the
next year they are narrowly limited in posting rights to matters directly involved in genealogy and
the operation of genealogical Websites" and they should also remain civil when posting on the
narrow range of topics available on Rootsweb. They are free to talk about other topics on other
servers.
Mr. Leverich instructs the SC that if "those terms are acceptable to [Susan and Carol]" she
should send mail to Tim Pierce to verify. He notes that it will do no good for Susan and Carol to
write, as all their mail is discarded at Rootsweb's mail hub.
The remaining two members of the Rootsweb Four, Pam Cresswell and Teresa Lindquist, are not
included in the above and will apparently continue to be banned indefinitely. As of this writing
[28 April 1999], neither Carol nor Susan has accepted Mr. Leverich's conditions and they remain
