Read at your own risk! Wednesday 19 Sept 2001: Teresa Lindquist notes that there are only three days remaining for the poll of the SW/SC members regarding the vacant Board seat and apparently the poll has not yet begun. She asks for an update on the status of the poll. Kathy Heidel notes that "at some point we are going to have to pick up some pieces of our lives and continue on." She asks Holly Timm how the poll will be handled, whether the time period can be extended and if Keith Giddeon and/or Linda Davenport can help with getting the volunteer list up. She states "We have to start forward or bin Laden will have won". [I don't care if he wins, I'm not voting for him. ;) ] In a response to Richard Howland [from the -ALL list] regarding the volunteer list that has been posted on the Election Committee webpage, Kathy says that she registered to vote but has not received an ID to proceed to vote. She notes "we still have just 3 days to select one of these fine people, but no way to do so." === No Shame Corner: Got this in the mail today from an alert reader: "Under further review your internet based genealogy commitee located at http://www.familydiscovery.com/redcross/ has also implemented a way to automatically donate money to the victims. They will donate 25% of each new membership directly to the National Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross special Papal fund account. 25% of your membership will be automatically deposited into a Red Cross special fund account. This same account has raised over 1.4 million dollars for this fund so far and is growing quickly. 100% of the proceeds in the special fund account will be donated directly to the Papal National Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross. Read at your own risk! Wednesday 19 Sept 2001: Holly Timm forwards a letter from the Election Committee Chair, Linda Haas Davenport. Linda says the reason the poll has been delayed due to a virus that attacked the server where the voting software is housed. Because of this "the Election Committee would like to request an extension on the polling and have it end Friday Sep 28th. This will allow the EC to get passwords out to everyone and give everyone the opportunity to express their opinion." Jana Black moves "that the AB extend the polling period to September 28, 2001." Kathy Heidel and Richard Harrison second the motion. Holly gives it number 01-30 and asks for discussion. Most Board members indicate that no discussion is needed. Holly notifies the Board that Ancestry.com has purchased the usgenweb.com domain and is donating it to the USGenWeb Project. The letter she received from Jake Gehring notes "This gift from Ancestry will result in The USGenWeb Project exercising control over all three of the usgenweb.xxx domains. Doc Schneider, who has been most helpful in this process, has already notified Internic of the transfer to The USGenWeb Project although it can take up to 30 days for Internic to update their records. With this donation, Ancestry reconfirms its ongoing support of volunteer genealogy projects such as The USGenWeb Project." Holly she's "accepted their generous gift to the USGenWeb Project with enthusiasm and appreciation", and has received the documentation "placing the usgenweb.com domain in the name of The USGenWeb Project." Jake seems to have forgotten that Root$web is _still_ the registrant for the usgenweb.org domain. While he's at it, maybe he can donate that one too. That's won't cost Ancestry but another $200 or so.] Several Board members gush their appreciation of Ancestry's "generous" offer. Ron Eason notes "It goes a very long way, in this members view, to showing everyone that our future is secure and that maybe there is hope!" Thursday 20 Sept 2001: Teresa Lindquist notes that Motion 01-30 (poll extension) should probably be amended "to include an extension of the time we get to appoint someone to the seat." She reminds the Board that Motion 01-28 requires them to appoint someone by Sept 28. Teresa asks Holly to get Jake to donate the usgenweb.org domain as well. Holly says that the usgenweb.org domain "is and has been ours" but she doesn't know why the contact information has not been changed. She thinks that Tim Stowell, as the Administrative Contact, is responsible for it, and the .net domain as well. Holly asks for amendments to Motion 01-30 (poll extension) to extend the time allowed to the Board to appoint a replacement member. She notes "I highly doubt that it would take us anything like seven days to accomplish it but it does hurt to have the safety margin that was in the original motion and nothing prohibiting the decision being made earlier." Kathy Heidel moves "to extend the SW/SC Polling Selection time until Sept. 28, 2001 Midnight CDT and for the Board Reviewing time to be extended to reflect the same extension from Sept 29, 2001 until October 5, 2001 Midnight CDT." Teresa seconds this motion. Kathy asks Jana to forward any volunteer bios she receives to the Board list. In Executive Session: --no activity === I Owe My Soul To The Company Store Corner: So, Ancestry has stepped in and bought our domain name for us. This is not a huge surprise, I suppose, and it _is_ a relatively cheap way of ensuring we don't go anywhere anytime soon. It didn't cost us a dime, we had no hope of raising anywhere near enough money to pay the extortion demand, and this way Ancestry can lighten some of the burden it placed on the Schneiders by canning them. Works out all around, I guess. There's nothing like being in serious monetary debt to your corporate sugardaddy to straighten out your priorities. === "No man ought to look a given horse in the mouth." ---John Heywood This has been your Daily Board Show. -Teresa Lindquist merope@radix.net ------- Daily Board Show, (c) 2001 by Teresa Lindquist, all rights reserved. Read at your own risk! Thursday 20 Sept 2001: Jana Black forwards Phyllis Rippee's bio. Phyllis has volunteered for the vacant SW/SC seat. Holly Timm says she will call for a vote on amended motion 01-30 (poll extention) this morning [Friday] if there is no discussion. Several members note that they have nothing to discuss on this motion. Holly forwards Don Kelly's bio to the Board list. He has volunteered for the vacant SW/SC seat. Jana forwards Scott Burrow's bio to the list. He has volunteered for the vacant SW/SC seat. Friday 21 October 2001: Holly calls the vote on amended Motion 01-30 (poll extension). Thus far 8 Board members have voted yes. In Executive Session: --minor discussion on amended motion 01-30 === "Poll" News: Four members have volunteered for the vacant SW/SC position: Scott Burow, Don Kelly, Gloria Mayfield and Phyllis Rippee. Gloria served previously on the Board, Phyllis and Don have both been active participants in the Project's mailing lists, and Scott Burow [who I am not familiar with] is a relative newcomer to the USGW scene. All but Gloria have submitted bios, which can be read in the Board-L archives. Linda Haas Davenport kinda jumped the gun this morning and announced that the polling date has been extended to September 28, although the Board has not yet voted on Motion 01-30. She also notifies the SW/SC list that "the server that hosts our voting/polling software was hit by a major virus...The EC will send passwords to each of you in the SW/SC Region as soon as we possibly can. The end of the polling has been extended until midnight (CDT) Friday Sep 28th with the results to be announced and forwarded to the Advisory Board on Sat Sep 29th." [despite a silly rumor promulgated by a silly person going around, the server was not "hacked".] So those of us in the SW/SC region should be receiving our passwords shortly and the "poll" will commence. === "Why should freedom of speech and freedom of press be allowed?
