HOAXES AND URBAN LEGENDS

Every one in cyberspace wants to be helpful, especially when it comes to alerting co-workers, friends and family of a possible heinous computer virus. Unfortunately, though, many of these warnings are hoaxes, foisted on unsuspecting, but nice people resulting in, at least, a waste of their bandwidth and time and at most, a more sinister effect (ex: data loss, pyschological effects (useless fear, anger) or identity theft.)  So, next time, before forwarding an alert on to your entire email list, check out one of these sites:

 Snopes

 Urban Legends

 Computer Incident Advisory Capability

If you hear a particularly amazing or horrible story, or see an incredible picture on the net, go to one of the above sites to see what's real and what's not!  Then, if possible, pass the word back to the person sending you the hoax so that they are advised.  In our current era, Americans should be vigilant so they do not fall victim to cyber terrorists.
