| Much of the best musical talent in Chicago
- gospel capital of the world - stands in the ranks of The
Sue Conway Victory Singers. Formed in 1988, the group quickly made
its name in the United States and Europe. In Europe the group has performed
more than 200 concerts. In March of 1999 The Sue Conway Victory Singers
became the first gospel group, ever, to perform at the world renowned LA
SCALA Theater in Milan! |
| Sue Conway, founder and artistic director
of the group is considered the Grande Dame of Chicago music and sings everything
from gospel to rock. Her rich and powerful alto voice has allowed her to
perform extensively in theaters, churches, clubs, musicals and recording
studios where she has worked with some of the greatest performers of our
time, including Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, Patty LaBelle, Natalie Cole,
Jerry "Ice Man" Butler, and Donny Hathaway. She has won the prestigious
"Joseph Jefferson Award" for her interpretation of Bessie Smith and
has performed on numerous radio and television programs in Europe and the
United States. The Chicago Tribune’s, Sid Smith reviewed her performance
- "A terrific singer, with a smoking low register and a piercing high
one, Conway is delightful. ….. whenever Conway sings there’s
magic.". |
| Unlike groups which perform only one of the
many styles of gospel music, The Sue Conway Victory
Singers perform them all. This versatility makes them unique. Each
member works not only within the group to create a special blend of gospel,
pop, R&B, jazz, blues and classics but also performs as a solo artist.
Their extensive repertoire ranges-from the rhythmic hand clapping beat of
gospel songs like "Oh Happy Day", Holly Ghost Power" and "This Is The Day
The Lord Hath Made" to traditional spirituals such as "Swing Low, Sweet
Chariot", "Soon Ah Will Be Done" and "Amazing Grace". |
| The Sue Conway Victory
Singers have performed in many of Europe’s best churches and venues
- including, The La Scala Theater (Milan), The
Carlo Felice (Genoa), The Teatro Ponchielli (Cremona), The Philharmonic
Hall & The Prinzregenten Theater (Munich) and The Tonhalle (Dusseldorf).
Also the group has been featured on television in the United States and
in Europe: i.e. American PBS Public Television Special - "Coming Home To
Gospel" starring Patty LaBelle & Albertina Walker, Italian RAI 1 variety
show - "Fantastico" (many times), German WDR Television Special - "Stern
Stunden Live". |
| Other group members are all acclaimed artists
in their own right many having their own gospel, jazz or blues groups and
releasing CD’s on a regular basis. They have performed with artists such
as Angela Bofill, The Temptations, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Nell Carter,
Dick Gregory, Willie Dixon and Edwin Jay Hawkins (The Father of Modern Gospel
Music) to name just a few. |
| In particular, Feliscia Coleman-Evans, coloratura
soprano, captivates every audience with her incredible range and religious
passion. She was the star of the widely acclamed "Sing Mahalia Sing!", has
performed before the president of the United States and appears frequently
as a featured soloist in gosple concerts nationally and internationally.
She made her Carnegie all debute in 1987, appearing as the featured soloist
in a tribute to Leontyne Price. |
